We're excited to launch our newest Signature Series coffee, the Papua New Guinea Simbai Balus Kopi! 🇵🇬
Coming from the Simbai region of PNG, Balus Kopi literally translates to "airplane coffee," since all green coffee from that area must be transported via plane.
Roasted to a dark medium, the PNG Simbai Balus Kopi has a flavor profile of bittersweet chocolate, dried cherry and caramel, with a full-bodied, buttery finish.
Hear more about PNG coffee production from our supplier, Genuine Origin:
All PNG green coffee from Simbai is transported via plane. For Simbai farmers to access the supply chain, they must bring their coffee to an airstrip. It’s not easy – some farmers have a day’s journey from their farm to the airfields. Once the coffee arrives, it’s weighed in parchment, recorded, and stored in Volcafe PNG’s warehouses.
Out of the nine million people in PNG, around 2.5 million (30%) are involved in coffee. Exports of coffee account for approximately 6% ($72 million) of the country’s GDP, and it’s the second leading agricultural product after palm oil.Â
We're incredibly honored to showcase this excellent coffee from a remote region of the world, and we think you're really going to like it!
For those of you in Chicagoland, you can also find it at the Lisle French Market on Saturdays and Western Springs French Market on Wednesdays. Hope to see you there!
